There are 9 ferry ports from 7 ferry companies that can take you to Martha’s Vineyard. 1. Steamship Authority (Woods Hole, Massachusetts)

This ferry is located at 1 Cowdry Road, Woods Hole, Massachusetts. From there, it will take 45 minutes to reach Martha’s Vineyard. Their ferry prices are at $8.50 for a one-way trip for adults, $4.50 for children ages 5 to 12, and no charge for children under 5 years old. If you plan on transporting your bicycle and/or motorized vehicle, too, then a bicycle costs $4 to transport one-way, a vehicle with up-to 16’ in length costs $81, and a vehicle with the length from 17’ to 20’ costs $91.

2. Hy-Line Cruises (Hyannis, Massachusetts)

This ferry port is located at 220 Ocean St, Hyannis, Massachusetts. From there, it will take a whole hour to reach Martha’s Vineyard. Their ferry prices are at $29.50 for a one-way trip and $59 round-trip for adults. $19.50 for a one-way trip and $39 for a round trip for children ages 5 to 12. But there is no charge for children under 5 years old. I know that these are not the lowest prices on the list but at least their ferry rates for transporting bikes are as low as $7 for a one-way trip and $14 for a round-trip.

3. Seastreak (New Bedford, Massachusetts)

This ferry port is located at 49 State Pier, New Bedford, Massachusetts. From there, it will take 45 minutes to reach Martha’s Vineyard. Their ferry prices are at $40 for a one-way trip and $70 round-trip for adults. Children ages 3 to 12 are free, except when it is the holidays. In that case, it costs $22 one way, $40 round trip for children. Just like the previous ferry, their ferry rates for transporting bikes are $7 for a one-way trip and $14 for a round-trip. Their ferry rates for adults might be pricey, but it would be great to bring the kids and save some cash.

This ferry is located at 75 Falmouth Heights Road, Falmouth, Massachusetts. From there, it will only take 35 minutes to reach Martha’s Vineyard. Their ferry prices are at fair $14 for a one-way trip and $22 round-trip for adults. $8 for a one-way trip and $12 for a round trip for children ages 5 to 12. But there is no charge for children under 5 years old. As for their ferry rates for transporting bikes, they are charging $4 for a one-way trip and $8 for a round-trip.

This ferry is located at East 35th Street and FDR Drive, New York. From there, it will take 5 hours 15 minutes to reach Martha’s Vineyard. Yes, it does take longer than the previous ferries on this list, but come on, New York? Unless you drive up to the previous ferry ports mentioned, 5 hours and 15 minutes is the fastest time you’ll get when riding a ferry from New York City (also known as, “the City that Never Sleeps“). Their ferry prices are at fair $165 for a one-way trip and $240 round-trip for adults. $75 for a one-way trip and $135 for a round trip for children ages 3 to 12. As for their ferry rates for transporting bikes, they are charging $20 for a one-way trip and $30 for a round-trip.

This ferry is located at 326 Shore Drive, Highlands, New Jersey. From there, it will take a whopping 6 hours just to reach Martha’s Vineyard. With consideration to the distance that has to be travelled, their ferry prices are $165 for a one-way trip and $240 round-trip for adults. $75 for a one-way trip and $135 for a round trip for children ages 3 to 12. For transporting bikes, they are charging $20 for a one-way trip and $30 for a round-trip. It might be best if you just rent out a bike when you’re at Martha’s Vineyard instead of paying for the transportation when you come from Highlands, New Jersey.

This ferry is located at 1347 Roger Williams Way, North Kingstown, Rhode Island. From there, it will take 1 hour 45 minutes to reach Martha’s Vineyard. Their ferry prices are at fair $56 for a one-way trip and $89 round-trip for adults. $44 for a one-way trip and $66 for a round trip for children ages 3 to 11. This ferry is located at 278 Scranton Avenue, Falmouth, Massachusetts. From this popular New England location, it will only take 1 hour to reach Martha’s Vineyard. Their ferry prices are at $36 for a one-way trip for adults, $24 for children ages 6 to 12, and no charge for children under 5 years old. If you plan on transporting your bicycle and/or motorized vehicle, too, then a bicycle costs $5 to transport one-way. Although they are more expensive than the other company in Falmouth and they also only offer a one way trip, at least children up-to ages 6 are free — if that counts as a bonus for you and your family.

You have reached the island! Now, where do you stay for the rest of your stay? According to TripAdvisor and other hotel booking agencies, the best Martha’s Vineyard hotels on the beach are:

3. The Hob Knob

Located at 128 Main Street in Edgartown, this charming hotel residential-style hotel is 3 miles away from Joseph Sylvia State Beach, a 5-minute walk away from Martha’s Vineyard Museum, and Edgartown Golf Club is 4.8 km away.

It’s amenities are complete with a parking lot, a fitness center with gym and workout room, free — yes, free — High Speed Internet (WiFi), free breakfast, their own bicycle rental, car hire, sauna, spa, bar/ lounge, nearby tennis court, fax and photocopying services, dry cleaning services, laundry services, ironing services and a gift shop, and a business center with internet access for all those coming in for a business venture — who can blame you, this island is a hotspot for all those looking for a simple yet elegant time.

They have three types of rooms: non-smoking rooms, suites, and family rooms. As for what’s inside the rooms, you will have bathrobes, safe, refrigerators, flatscreen TV, toiletries, hair dryer, telephone, iron, your very own seating area, iPod docking station — because ‘who does like music?’ — air conditioning, and, of course, housekeeping service. These rooms cost $115 up-to $180 dollars per night (Booking.com, 2020).

What’s more is that the hotel just recently decided to add 18 more rooms, add a backyard pool, expand the hotel spa and reorganize its parking (Vineyard Gazette, 2020). Also, it is ranked number one out of the B&Bs/ Inns in Edgartown (TripAdvisor, 2020). If these don’t already show that the Hob Knob is successfully booming with customers, I don’t know what will.

2. Pequot Hotel

This hotel comprises three areas: the Annex, Middle Building, and Main House. This huge hotel is more like a modern and bright yet warm and inviting cottage.

The Annex is situated across the courtyard from Main House. It is designed in a cottage style, but it has no TVs. It has the following rooms:

• Annex Queen has a queen-sized bed, private bath, air-conditioning, wifi, but no TV.
• Annex Twins has two queen-sized beds, a private bath, air-conditioning, wifi, but no TV.

The Middle Building has cozy rooms on three floors which can be accessed by the exterior stairways above the courtyard. It has the following rooms:

III. Getting Around Martha’s Vineyard

If you don’t have or did not bring your car into the island, there still are plenty of choices for you to travel and get to places in Martha’s Vineyard.

Some of the choices are provided by the Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority. Located at 11A Street, Airport Business Park in Edgartown, they provide cheap transit bus rides and paratransit services (i.e. “THE LIFT” and the “Medivian”) all year round. Without further ado, here are their services in detail:

Public Transportation (Buses and Paratransit Services)

• Bus

Their buses travel through and to Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, Aquinnah, Chilmark, and West Tisbury. All buses accommodate the handicap and pets. They even have bike racks. The bus fares cost $1.25 per town pass through during off-season and $2.00 during the in-season. But since Martha’s Vineyard is used to commuters and tourists, they have day passes that allow you to have an unlimited pass from one day to an entire year! Their length of the day pass and its costs are as follows:

• 1 Day Pass –    $10.00
• 3 Day Pass –    $18.00
• 7 Day Pass –    $30.00
• 31 Day Pass –   $60.00
• Annual Pass –   $150.00

What’s more is that children of six and under can ride free as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Seniors of the age 65 and above, people with disabilities, and the military can buy tickets and day passes at a discount rate.

• The Lift

The Lift is a bus service specifically for people with disabilities. This service is available all day and has a fixed-route bus service. To apply and make a reservation for the Lift service, you have to call (508) 693-9440 ext.1 before you can get on it.

• Medivian

The Medivan is a medical transportation for senior citizens aged 60 and older and disabled persons. Just like the “Lift”, you must apply and make a reservation by dialing 508-693-9440 ext. 1. When you succeed in making a reservation, you have to call them again a day before your scheduled trip to confirm your seat in the service. 

This ride costs $20.00 for a one way and $40.00 for a round trip fee which will be collected by the driver upon boarding the van. Unfortunately, there are no refunds if you miss your reservation date. So, make sure to re-confirm and be on time.

However, “public transport is very time consuming and pretty frustrating,” complained a reviewer in TripAdvisor (2016). So, you might want to consider the next options.

Private and Group Tours

If buses aren’t your style, you can try the accommodating and varying private and group tours available near the ferry dock. There are two types of tours: Bus Tours and Van Tours.

To be guided around the island, the Bus Tours are probably for you. They leave on a scheduled basis from Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven to specific tourist spots. However, these are private tours or taxi rides. They can’t stop anywhere you like. So, keep in mind that these tours are point to point tours.

If you already have a plan of the places you want to go to and you just need a guide, you should probably skip the Bus Tours and head for the Van Tours instead. However, these usually require at least groups of 4.

There are bike trails all over Martha’s Vineyard. 44 miles of them to prove my point. So, believe me when I say they have bike and moped rentals, shops, repair shops and even tours scattered across the island.

To rent a two-wheeled beast, Adventure Rentals is your main guy. This 20 year old company can assure your quality and safety. They even offer free customer pick up in most spots of the island. So you don’t have to worry about finding their shop at 19 Beach Rd, Vineyard Haven.
